When you start a company in Japan, choosing the right type of corporation is essential. There are mainly two types of corporation choices in Japan, a Kabushiki Kaisha, often called KK, or a Godo Kaisha, GK.

Kabushiki Kaisha (KK)
The most common corporate structure in Japan, suitable for businesses seeking credibility and long-term growth.

Godo Kaisha (GK)
A simpler and more flexible company structure, often chosen by small to mid size businesses and startups.

Branch Office

A branch office is an extension of an overseas company and is not a separate legal entity in Japan. It can conduct commercial activities such as sales and contracts, but the parent company remains legally responsible for the branch’s obligations.

Representative Office

A representative office is used for non-commercial activities such as market research, information gathering, and business liaison. It cannot conduct sales or generate revenue in Japan but is often used as a first step before establishing a branch or subsidiary.
